If you're just getting started with Pilates, you might not even be aware that you can do Pilates without machines and studio equipment. The equipment is practically symbolic of Pilates, but that doesn't mean a good old fashioned mat class isn't effective.

Cover the basics

You'll learn all of the fundamental Pilates movement techniques in Pilates mat classes. Neutral spine, a properly engaged core, c-curve, shoulder and pelvic stability, spinal articulation, full breathing and working with oppositional energy. These are integral to Pilates mat work. Learning these basics on the mat where there are fewer things to keep up with makes it that much easier to use them on the equipment. 

A Pilates mat workout that incorporates the classic Pilates sequence is an exceptionally good workout that will provide the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits, not to mention, of course, that Pilates mat work is the alpha and omega of core workouts.

It's gentle...but it's also challenging

Many of the exercises are performed in reclining or sitting positions, and most are low impact and partially weight bearing. Pilates is so safe, it is used in physical therapy facilities to rehabilitate injuries.

Pilates is also an extremely flexible exercise system. Modifications to the exercises allow for a range of difficulty ranging from beginning to advanced. You will get the workout that best suits you now, and increase the intensity as your body conditioning improves.

Toning, flexibility, better posture, more efficient movement, the body/mind connection — just about every benefit the Pilates method has to offer can be achieved through mat work.

Body Awareness

Pilates has nothing to do with religion, but it was definitely developed with the intention of helping to integrate and elevate the body, mind, and spirit. Pilates exercises are always practiced with the Pilates principles of centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.

When a Pilates workout is infused with this kind of attention and quality it becomes more than a physical experience, and the effects are felt throughout one's life. The mat is the perfect place to embody the Pilates principles.

Pia offers classes for every level, and each class is capped at 8 people so everyone can get the individual attention they need.

All classes and private sessions are held on Squash Court 1.

All classes include various props such as foam rollers, magic circles, chi balls and therabands to name a few. Mats and equipment are provided for your convenience.

For hygiene reasons, you may feel more comfortable bringing your own mat or towel to overlay on the mat provided.

Here you will be able to modify to your level as Pia will include more advanced Pilates exercises. You will be challenged!

Private Sessions

If classes are not for you then a one-on-one training session is more suitable. In your first session, Pia will include the 30 minute fitness screening before you start to exercise. If you want to bring a partner or a friend, a private session may be split between two people

The famous Pilates fitness screening designed by Polestar Pilates allows the instructor to assess your functional movement and set goals and focus. This is complimentary if you book a class or private session. It is a must if you have never done Pilates before
